Mahogany is a generic name for any typical dark brown hardwood. There are masses of trees in this family, but generally they all produce a reddish brown colour with a straight grain and little or no knotting. It is particularly popular in cabinet making, and most famously used in Gibson guitars. A heavy dense wood that is not often used for wood flooring, although there is an equivalent called Merbau.
