One of the most famous, stylish and glamorous woods in the world but also unfortunately now nearly extinct. Most of us think we know Ebony for its jet black colour, although in reality it varies from a deep red to black. Ebony trees are relatively small, and are found in the tropical rainforests of Africa, India, Ceylon, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Generally, the dark Ebony that is so sought after comes from a higher altitude, and from older trees. Ebony from a lower altitude has a more reddish tone, as the soil from lower altitudes has a higher iron content. This is an extremely rare wood, and it's very unlikely that you would ever find any for wood flooring as imports are severely restricted. Guitar manufacturers Gibson had their factory raided in 2009 on suspicion of using Ebony!
